Oxygenation Index Calculator

The oxygenation index is used in intensive care units to measure the usage of the fraction of inspired oxygen in the body. The mean airway pressure refers to the mean pressure applied during a positive mechanical ventilation. The portion of total blood pressure excreted by oxygen is referred as the partial pressure of arterial oxygen. Use our oxygenation index calculator to determine the oxygen index which can be used to predict the need for ECMO.

Formula:

Oxygenation Index (OI) = (FiO2 x MAP x 100) / PaO2 Where, FiO2 = Inspired Oxygen Concentration MAP = Mean Airway Pressure PaO2 = partial pressure of arterial O2

Example:

Find the oxygen index, where the MAP is 4 mmHg, Inspired oxygen concentration is 23% and partial pressure of arterial O2 is 2 mmHg.

Solution:

Oxygen Index = ((23 / 100) x 4 x 100) / 2
= 46
